Why Regular Lung Cancer Screening is Important

Lung cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in Singapore and a major cause of cancer mortality in Southeast Asia. The danger lies in its silence: most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage when treatment options are limited.

  • The Survival Gap: Patients diagnosed early are 13 times more likely to survive five years compared to those diagnosed late.
  • The Benefit: Effective screening can significantly reduce lung cancer-related deaths, yet many avoid it due to fear of radiation and costs of the traditional screening modality of a CT scan. The LUNGClear blood test is a simple, sensitive and cheaper alternative.

Regular screening helps bridge this gap, catching potential issues when they are most treatable.

What is the LUNGClear™ Test?

LUNGClear™ is a simple, blood test!

  • How it works: We draw a small blood sample and send it to the lab.
  • The technology: The test identifies a specific molecular signature (microRNA) linked to lung cancer.
  • The outcome: It provides a risk score classifying your likelihood of having lung cancer as Low, Intermediate, or High at the time of testing.
  • Review: We will review this score with you to decide if further imaging or specialist referral is necessary.

How Accurate is LUNGClear™?

LUNGClear™ provides valuable risk stratification:

  • 74% Sensitivity & 78% Specificity when both Intermediate and High-risk results are considered positive.
  • High Specificity (97%) when only High-risk results are considered positive, minimizing false alarms.

It detects all stages with up to 89% specificity and is 20% more accurate than other blood-based biomarker tests.

Who Should Take the LUNGClear™ Test?

LUNGClear™ is primarily intended for healthy individuals aged 40 and above who want to assess their risk but may not yet qualify for or desire a CT scan.

It is strongly recommended if you have these risk factors:
Smoking history: You are a current smoker or have quit in the past
Passive exposure: Regular exposure to second-hand smoke at home or work
Occupational hazards: Exposure to asbestos, coal gas, silica, nickel, arsenic, or vinyl chloride
Family history: An immediate relative has had lung cancer
Medical history: You have chronic lung conditions like COPD or are a lung cancer survivor (increased risk of recurrence)

FAQ

Early-stage lung cancer often has no symptoms. When they do appear, they can be easily mistaken for common illnesses: persistent cough, loss of appetite, bloody phlegm or vague chest discomfort.

A low dose CT scan is an effective alternative with at least 90% sensitivity. However, it involves radiation exposure and is usually reserved for very high-risk individuals (e.g., heavy smokers). We also offer this test for suitable patients.

While there is no guaranteed prevention, you can significantly reduce your risk by avoiding tobacco (both smoking and secondhand smoke) and protecting yourself from occupational hazards like asbestos or arsenic. Going for regular screening can help with early detection and treatment.
